This week is very civic
Looks we will have at least two Very Interesting contests for City Council seats on this side of the river this year:
- Garrett Sawyer has dropped his bid to be mayor and is joining Sarah Abubaker in the race for the 4th District City Council seat being vacated by Kristen Nye.
- Tavares Floyd (until recently the the 6th District liaison) is in the mix for the 6th District City Council seat, joining Willie Hilliard in challenging incumbent Ellen Robertson.
In other local politics...
- Perennial candidate Emmett Johnson Jafari has come out for the 8th District School Board seat currently held by Dawn Page. Ms.Page has not stated whether she intends to run for re-election this fall. Mr.Jafari has previously unsuccessfully run for the 8th District School Board seat in 2000, sheriff in 2001, mayor in 2004, sheriff in 2005, clerk of the court in 2011 and 2014 (his best, with 22% of the vote), sheriff in 2017, and mayor in 2020.
- Virginia Delegate Michael Jones (77th) is denying accusations of what sound like abuse, is facing a restraining order

There was some excitement on Forest Hill Avenue last week when a mix of city and state police in marked and unmarked cars converged on a car in the M&M CONVENIENCE-TOBACCO parking lot on the 3400 block of Forest Hill Avenue on Thursday.
A spokesperson for the Virginia State Police would only say that the action was a “Richmond Police Departments case that we assisted with”; the City of Richmond Police department has not yet responded to our request for more information.
WRIC reported that “at approximately 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, officers were investigating a robbery that resulted in one person being apprehended in the 3400 block of Forest Hill Avenue”, which likely the same incident.
Newly added to our map of murals and street art is this striking December 2022 piece by Dathan Kane / _dkane on Hull Street. The piece was commissioned by More Than Art.
HISTORY
- Some pics of Midlothian Turnpike from 1989. The same, but different! Would have LOVED to find a pic of the Kmart that was there.
- The oldest frame house in Richmond dates back to the 1750s and is tucked away in a little neighborhood off of Forest Hill Avenue.
ALSO!
- Know a kid who rides bikes? Sign 'em up for the Forest Hill Spring Classic!
- Pastor Joe Reeves at Tabernacle Praise Ministries serves the homeless but struggles with the drug use and overdosing outside their door. That corner of Toler Furniture Co Street & Hull Street is a hot mess.
- Why is the #$@!% traffic so bad on Forest Hill Avenue this week?
- I'm putting this together before everything is finalized, but unless something has gone really weird then City Council on Monday night approved funds for tree planting & playground beautification in the area. Nice!
- More good news - there is a new fire station in the works on Richmond Highway.
- Mark your calendars and get your reservations - Richmond Restaurant Week is this month. Eat well and help fight hunger in Central Virginia
