THE NEW CAMERAS PROVE THAT PEOPLE ARE SPEEDING THEIR ASSES OFF ON SEMMES AVENUE

Axios is reporting that the 2 speed enforcement cameras installed by Linwood Holton and Patrick Henry are generating an average of 176 speeding tickets a day – and that’s only being in use four hours a day, five days a week. Speed cameras may or may not be effective enforcement, but that is a hell of a data point.

And remember – to get a ticket, the driver has to be going at least 11 miles per hour above the limit. This is nuts.

The plan is to eventually roll this out to 13 school zones across the city.

Right now there are strict limitations on when & where the cameras can be used. Delegate Mike Jones would like to see localities have more options.

BIKE/PEDESTRIAN STUFF

May is RVA BIKE MONTH and there are 60 events on the books - including a good number on our side of the river! South Richmond's own Cycling Without Age will have their trishaw in Fonticello Park on Sunday May 5 - come out for a ride!
The city is looking for input on a number of bike/pedestrian projects across the city including Hopkins Road bike lanes, Forest Hill & Hull Street improvements.
The long-delayed Jahnke Road Improvement Project is now on track for Fall 2026

GOV/POLITICS/ELECTION

We went to Nicole Jones' 9th District Meeting last Thursday at Pop's Bingo World. One take away: the 9th District used to have 10 civic associations, now only has 2. Frank Wilson is running for the 8th District City Council seat. Would be the first Councilman to have been drafted by the Steelers.
Following the recent resignation of Jonathan Young, the Richmond City School Board is seeking to appoint an interim representative for the 4th District. Interested?
As first reported by Beth Almore at EXIT INTERVIEW, Wesley Hedgepeth says that he has put his name in for the School Board 4th District interim appointment and is interested in running for the open seat.
Rumors of at least one more candidate soon to announce. Hit us up if you know something we should know.

The was an accidental shooting on Hull Street a few nights back. No real details on that.
Seems worth noting that through April 22, there have been only 2 homicides in South Richmond in 2024, compared to 13 in the same period in 2023.
